GUNTUR: An all-party meeting on Thursday sought a survey by the district administration to identify the genuine persons who were in need of house sites at Swarnabharati Nagar on the city outskirts. There have been allegations and counter-allegations of encroachment of Government land, part of which was allotted to some beneficiaries who had lost their houses during the past three years. While some had stayed there, others sold their plots and encroached lands elsewhere. The District Collector, G. Jayalakshmi, called for a meeting of political parties, non-government organisations and some of the displaced persons at the Collectorate where she sought the cooperation of all parties to identify the real beneficiaries and throw out the encroachers. She threatened to take criminal action against those who tried to cheat the administration. Some residents complained that there were political pressures on them for vacating the place, while others complained of lack of development to enable them to stay in the land meant for them. They said basic amenities were lacking for them to stay on at the place. The Communist Party of India secretary, Muppalla Nageswara Rao, and party leader Ajay Kumar asked the officials to identify the true beneficiaries by deleting the names of those who had already got sites elsewhere. The CPI (M) district secretary, D. Rama Devi, wanted the officials to maintain proper registers of the beneficiaries and pattas only for genuine beneficiaries through open selection. She wanted the administration to fulfil the promises of providing pattas to those who were given assurances during the visits of VIPs. The TDP representative, Ramachandra Rao, sought development of the colony first with all amenities and making it suitable for habitation. The Congress representative, T. Murali, promised to support and cooperate with the officials in identifying the beneficiaries.
