Commodity prices

The following were the rates (in rupees per kg) of essential commodities in the local wholesale market on Thursday, according to Vijayawada Chamber of Commerce and Industry:

Groundnut oil - 52.50, palmolein oil - 39.50, sunflower oil - 50, tamarind (flower variety) - 22 to 29, tamarind (karipuli variety) - 42 to 47, chillies (refrigerated) - 15 to 20, chillies (non-refrigerated) - 10 to 12, rice (2716) - 13.50, rice (super fine) - 15, rice (sona masoori) - 17 to 19, rice (samba masoori) - 16 to 17, black gram - 27 to 28 and red gram - 26.30 to 31.50.

Gora's death anniversary

The Atheist Centre, Vijayawada, plans to organise a seminar on `Science, Society and Scientific Outlook' at the centre here on July 26, to mark the 30th death anniversary of Gora, freedom fighter and social revolutionary.

Kumar Kalanand Mani, founder of the Peaceful Society, Goa, will be the chief guest. The seminar would be inaugurated by the district governor of the Rotary, M.C. Das. Saraswathi Gora would preside.

Quiz contest

The Vijayawada branch of SICASA of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, proposes to conduct branch-level quiz and elocution competitions at its local office in Ammana Estate, Prakasam Road, on July 24. Winners would be sent to participate in the regional-level event to be held in Chennai.

Those interested can get their names registered with the branch. The persons concerned could be contacted on phone number 2432406 on or before July 22.

Chess association elections

The executive committee of Andhra Pradesh Chess Association, Vijayawada division, has unanimously resolved to conduct elections to the committee for the year 2005-07 on August 21, according to the association president, D.V.K. Rama Rao. The annual general body meeting of the association would also be held on the same day at 10 a.m. Further details could be had by contacting phone number 0866-2542636.
