Call for action plan to protect rivers

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Experts participating in a workshop organised by the Centre for Earth Science Studies (CESS) here on Thursday highlighted the need for a comprehensive restoration and management programme to reverse the impact of sand-mining and pollution on the rivers in the State.

The workshop urged the Government to prevent the diversion of funds sanctioned for district river management committees. It also called for an action plan to integrate the protection of riverbeds and banks, afforestation, curbs on sand-mining and utilisation of water resources. Speakers who addressed the workshop stressed the need for district river management committees to coordinate the efforts and enlist the support of voluntary agencies, panchayats and the general public. District Collectors and officials from the Revenue, Irrigation and Mining and Geology departments participated in the workshop. Principal Secretary, Revenue, John Mathai inaugurated the training programme. Land Use Commissioner Alphons Kannanthanam presided over the function.
