THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The ongoing tussle between the University of Kerala and Mary Matha College of Engineering and Technology, Paliode, over allegations of mass copying during the B.Tech examinations held in the college during November-December 2004 has taken a new turn with the High Court staying the decision of the university to terminate proceedings relating to granting affiliation to the college. The judgment was delivered on July 18 and the stay will be in force till the court completes hearing on a writ petition filed by the college soon after the university first took a decision to stop affiliation proceedings early this year. The July 18 judgment notes that there is no material on record to connect the management with the examination irregularity and adds that the role of the management can be suspected but that such suspicion alone cannot be a ground for taking such an action. The judgment also says that the stay does not prevent the university from holding `a proper detailed inquiry with notice and opportunity to the management and decide afresh whether the management had any role in the mass copying.' Moreover, the judgment directs the university to ensure that there is at least one or two faculties from outside are appointed as invigilators in all private colleges, especially unaided colleges. The university is yet to come up with a plan to `rehabilitate' students of the Mary Matha College for which there is no affiliation now. The sub-committee of the Syndicate set up to study the issue is yet to submit its report.
