COIMBATORE: In a dusk-to-dawn raid conducted in two farmhouses in Coimbatore along the Kerala border, the Coimbatore Rural Police have seized 13,685 litres of rectified spirit, which was concealed in about 391plastic cans. Following a tip-off received over phone, Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore Rural District, A.G. Ponn Manickavel constituted special teams. The teams kept tab for the last two days and after preparing the ground for the raid, the teams comprising 10 police personnel stormed the farmhouse late on Wednesday night.
Value put at Rs.13 lakhs
In one of the farmhouses at Muthugoundenpudur near Vazhukkuparai in Madukkarai, the team found 255 cans each containing 35 litres of rectified spirit. In another farmhouse at Meenakshipuram, 136 cans each containing 35 litres of spirit was unearthed. The total value of spirit seized was put at Rs. 13 lakhs.
Two persons in custody
Two persons said to be in charge of the consignment, Mohammed Iliyas (33) of Kuniamuthur and Babu (22) of Kanzhikode have been taken into custody. A sum of Rs. 1.02 lakh, three mobile phones and two cars were seized from their possession. A hunt has been launched for the remaining two accused Sampathkumar and Vimal, said to be dealers of sandalwood and rectified spirit. The SP also announced cash rewards for the members of the special teams.
