NEW DELHI: In one of the biggest raids conducted by the Labour Department of the Delhi Government, as many as 98 minor children put to hardship by zari unit owners were rescued at Bhajanpura in North-East Delhi on Thursday. While the police have arrested 11 people in this connection, the young victims have been sent to the Prayas shelter home for rehabilitation. The raid was planned by the Labour Department after it received a tip-off that children were being forced to work under inhuman condition in zari units at Bhajanpura. Around 11-30 a.m., 16 labour inspectors were sent to the area to conduct a reconnaissance and identify the zari units, following which the officials raided the places with the help of 45 police personnel. Senior police officers also reached the spot after they were informed about the raids. According to the Labour Department, the rescued children, who were between 5 to 10 years of age, are from Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and also from Nepal. They disclosed that most of them used to get as low as Rs. 50 per month. They were forced to work for long hours.
