Poor girls lured into flesh trade

Santosh Patnaik

Five women caught in recent crackdown

  • Call girls caught by the police are usually from poor families
  • A guest house run by a couple, was closed after a police raid
  • Regular raids have not helped solve the problem

VISAKHAPATNAM: Soumya (not real name), mother of three, does not know how she will face her family. She was one among five young women caught in a recent crackdown by police on a sex den.

``I used to work in a beauty parlour for doing facial, pedicure and manicure. Only after joining there as a trainee-beautician, I was lured to do body massage to male customers,'' she disclosed. Though they used to get monthly salary of Rs. 1,500, they were getting tips from the customers for gratification of their lust.

In all the raids--arrest of call girls in a couple of star hotels, busting of racket in a beachside private guest house and entertaining sex trade in running cars on the busy thoroughfares of Gajuwaka--it was found that the pimps lured vulnerable sections--mostly young girls from poor family to get into flesh trade.

``I had to do it on contract basis after getting used to earning easy money due to financial constraints,'' a part-time commercial sex worker, who was caught along with several others in the guesthouse, had told the police during interrogation. The guesthouse, run by a couple, who had migrated from Bangalore, was closed immediately after the raid some time ago.

Another stated that she came to the city from a rural area with a dream to launch a career as a model and later try her luck in Tollywood.

"But a pimp here forced me into flesh trade by telling me that I have to pay this as the price to become a model,'' was the revelation of a sex worker, who was picked up from a three- star hotel. Admits A.V. Subba Rao Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police in most cases, the call girls caught by them were from poor families.
