50 lakhs register for over 2 lakh vacancies annually

NEW DELHI: More than 50 lakh job seekers register annually with employment exchanges for over two lakh notified vacancies.

There were 4.05 crore people waiting for jobs at the end of 2004. In 2003, the number was 4.14 crores, shows an analysis of the employment exchange statistics by the Directorate-General of Employment and Training of the Union Labour Ministry.

There was an increasing trend in the number of vacancies notified during the last years. During 2004, as many as 2.7 lakh jobs were notified, up from 2.6 lakhs in 2003. However, the placements, of the order of 1.55 lakhs during 2003, went down to 1.38 lakhs in 2004. Fifty per cent of the vacancies notified during 2004 were filled through the employment exchanges.

The maximum number of 70 lakh job seekers through the employment exchanges was in West Bengal followed by 45.1 lakhs in Tamil Nadu, 43.9 lakhs in Maharashtra and 37.5 lakhs in Kerala. The maximum number of vacancies notified during 2004 was in Gujarat (74,400) followed by Maharashtra (35,7000), Tamil Nadu (28,000) and West Bengal (22,700).

There are 947 employment exchanges with the highest (86) in Kerala, 84 in Uttar Pradesh and 75 in West Bengal.
