PUDUKOTTAI: Three persons were killed and five injured in a blast that occurred in a cracker-manufacturing shed at Vellalavidhuthi near Gandarvakottai in the district on Friday. The deceased have been identified as Chinnaih Rowther (60), owner of the cracker-manufacturing unit, Chinnaiah (60) and Subbiah (40). Police sources said the explosion occurred at around 1.15 p.m. when the country crackers were being manufactured. The cause of the blast is under investigation. Superintendent of Police K.N. Sathiyamoorthy and other senior police officials visited the spot. A fire tender from Gandarvakottai was sent to the site to carry out rescue work. Thanjavur Special Correspondent writes: Three women and two children injured in the explosion were admitted to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital here. The children were later shifted to the Rajah Mirasudhar Hospital. The injured women were Ramayee (24), wife of Selvam, Subetha (35), wife of Chinnaiyah, and Amutha (27). One-year-old Ramya and Surya (3) were Ramayee's daughters. The women, who suffered burn injuries on their face and hands, looked dazed. According to Ilangovan, brother of Ramayee, his sister went to the shed to assist in serving tea and snacks. The explosion occurred then and she was injured.
