Pananchery to implement drinking water scheme

THRISSUR: A Rs.4.20-crore project envisaged to make available drinking water to 3,000-odd families will be implemented in Pananchery panchayat with the reservoir at Peechi as the main source under the `Jalanidhi' scheme of the State Government.

The project would be implemented jointly by the panchayat and the beneficiaries council, Peechi Sudhajala Vitharana (Drinking Water Distribution) Federation, with financial support from the World Bank.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, panchayat president M.K. Sivaraman said the World Bank would finance 75 per cent of the project cost while the panchayat will put in 10 per cent and the beneficiaries will bear the remaining 15 per cent.

The Federation is a registered body comprising 38 beneficiary councils formed in different parts of the panchayat, of which 34 were formed by the voluntary group `Bhodana'. A sum of Rs.15 lakhs collected from the beneficiary councils as beneficiary contribution has been deposited in the Federal Bank.

They said the option to join the scheme would be open till July 31.

Those who have joined the scheme have to remit Rs.1,250 as the first instalment of the beneficiary contribution. The procedure to acquire land to construct a treatment plant for the scheme has begun. The Chennai-based Mahindra Acres Consulting Engineers, which is the implementing agency for the project, has begun survey work in the panchayat. Panchayat secretary Karmel George, Federation president E.G. Bhaskaran Achari and secretary T. Gopinathan were among those present at the press conference.
