Kashyap rallies to beat gritty Amar

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: V. Amar of Karnataka put up a plucky display before going down to the top seed, P. Kashyap of Andhra 4-15, 15-12, 8-15 in the boys' under-19 singles semifinals of the Union Bank all-India junior ranking badminton championship at the KBA courts here on Friday.

Kashyap takes on third seed Ajay Jayaram, who tamed the second seed and Maharashtra team-mate, Amit Khadge a thriller at 12-15, 15-7, 17-14.

Kashayp racing to an early lead wrapped up the first game with ease, but he was rocked by a splendid resistance from Amar, who came up with some fierce half smashes and neat net dribble to unsettle his rival and he kept a slender lead, before Kashyap wrested it back at 9-8. But Amar maintained the pressure on his rival, who conceded quite few negative points at this stage to drop the game.

The decider saw a see-saw struggle till the first 16 points, before Kashyap inched his to the post past a desperate Amar, who was looking for quick points.

As expected Saina Nehwal made the finals of the girls under-16 and under-19 singles.

In the under-19 singles, she ran into bit of problem against giant-killer Gayathri Vartak of Maharashtra, who made it to the last four round with an upset win over third seed Anitha Ohlan. Gayathri looks set for an encore when she led 6-2 against Saina in the first game.

But the wily Saina, fought her way back, to level six-all and took the game at 11-6. There was no stopping Saina in the second game. Saina takes on the fourth seed, Sayali Gokhale of Maharashtra , who beat second seed Apanra Balan 11-5,11-5 in the other semifinals.

In the girls' under-16 singles semifinals, Saina made a short work of Monisha Vinayak of Karnataka 11-1, 11-1 and set up a title clash with Arundathi Pantawane, who proved too good for an erratic fourth seed Ashwini Ponnappa of Karnataka 11-0, 11-4 in the boys' under-15 singles final.
