Retaining number while changing phone operator

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has started work on allowing subscribers to change their operator without surrendering the old number. Called portability, the concept has been implemented in many countries particularly in case of mobile phones. "The inability of the subscriber to retain his or her telephone number when she or he wishes to change operators presents an obstacle to competition,'' reasoned TRAI.

Enumerating the various types of portability, TRAI has indicated its unwillingness to tackle fixed number portability at the current juncture. On mobile number portability, it said subscribers would benefit from lower prices, as has been the case in Hong Kong and Australia where operators vie with one another to provide the best packages and customer service.
