MYSORE: The Mysore City Corporation continued its drive against footpath encroachments on Friday by pulling down unauthorised structures in the Devaraja Market area and on Ashoka Road. Seventy personnel from the corporation cleared unauthorised structures such as petty shops, telephone booths, platforms and roofing protruding from the buildings in these areas under tight police security. The operation ended in a few hours and footpaths of Shivarampet, Boti Bazaar and Small Clock Tower area were cleared of encroachments. Unlike the previous drives, the corporation staff did not face much resistance from shop owners. The corporation, which had come under fire from corporators from the Chamaraja Assembly constituency for targeting their areas and ignoring encroachments in the Narasimharaja Assembly constituency, deployed its personnel even on Ashoka Road and Sawdey Road. The corporation squad not only demolished unauthorised structures on Ashoka Road, but also carried away doors and windows kept for sale on the footpaths surrounding Five Lights Circle near St. Philomena's Church. The corporation Commissioner, A.B. Ibrahim, inspected the demolition drive for some time. Mr Ibrahim said the operation will be extended to all parts of the city and warned encroachers to remove unauthorised structures or face action. S.N. Nagaraj, Nagalingappa, Mahesh, Dorai Raju and Govindappa, corporation engineers, supervised the demolition operation, while the Assistant Commissioner of Police, M. Ganesh, supervised the security arrangement.
