Diplomat's vehicle stolen at gunpoint
V.S. Sambandan
COLOMBO:
Gunmen on Saturday morning waylaid and stole the vehicle of Assistant High Commissioner of India in Kandy K.R.R. Pillai.
The men were apparently following Mr. Pillai's luxury four-wheel-drive vehicle along the Kandy-Colombo Highway, officials said.
When Mr. Pillai and his wife stopped at a popular rest house at Ambepussa, about 50 km from Kandy, the armed men, who spoke Sinhalese, pulled up and took away the keys of the new, unregistered vehicle from the driver at gunpoint and sped away.
Sri Lankan police and security forces deployed helicopters and launched a countrywide hunt to track down the vehicle.
The motive behind the theft is not known. Car thieves prowling the Sri Lankan highways is not a new phenomenon.
There have been reports of vehicles being stolen and then sold across the country, including in rebel-held areas, after changing the identity of the vehicle.
