CHENNAI: On Saturday morning, it seemed as if the Tour de France had come to the city. Scores of cyclists pedalled up the Marina shoreline, with all the enthusiasm, if not the professionalism of Lance Armstrong. It was enthusiasm that counted here and the desire for a better world.

Over 250 associates of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and their families participated in a cycle rally to stress the need for a clean, green, pollution-free environment. The TCS Chief Executive Officer, S. Ramadorai, flagged off one group, while the City Police Commissioner, R. Nataraj flagged off the second group.

Addressing his team, Mr. Ramadorai said, "Our practices should ensure, at the end of the day, that we feel we are in a position to safely hand over this environment to the next generation." The TCS designed a three-dimensional framework for environment management to be implemented in all its offices.

The force behind the rally was TCS Maitree, which defines itself as "a people's movement to create a community amongst the extended family of TCS." It also serves as a branch that executes the corporate social responsibility of TCS. Mala Ramadorai, founder-patron of Maitree handed over a cheque for Rs. 1 lakh to a representative from Jeeva Jyothi, an NGO for street and working children towards the cost incurred on procuring a handmade paper unit. Arjuna Award winner Shiny Abraham handed over certificates to the participants.

The event was co-sponsored by TI Cycles.
