`Akale' bags top honours, Syamaprasad is best director

Mammootty best actor; Kavya and Geethu share best actress award





THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: `Akale' directed by Syamaprasad claimed six honours, including that for the best feature film, in the State film awards for 2004 announced here on Saturday.

`Kathavaseshan' directed by T.V. Chandran, `Kaazhcha' by debutant director Blessy and `Oridam' by Pradeep Nair won four awards each.

Syamaprasad was adjudged the best director (Akale). The best actor award went to Mammootty for his role as a film operator in `Kaazcha.' Geethu Mohandas (Akale and Oridam) and Kavya Madhavan (Perumazhakalam) shared the best actress award.

Jury chairman Sreekumaran Thampy said Akale was unanimously selected the best picture for its poignant representation of the conflict between dreams and realities. The film was also noteworthy for its technical excellence.

The awards were announced by Culture Minister A.P. Anil Kumar at a press conference.

Sheela's role of a tormented mother in Akale won her the second best actress award. Lalu Alex was adjudged the second best actor for his role in `Manhupoloru Penkutty'. The award for the best child artiste was shared by Baby Sanoosh (Kaazhcha and Saumyam) and Master Yash (Kaazhcha).

Kaazhcha was selected the most popular film of the year and Blessy won the award for the best debutant director. Akale also bagged the awards for the best cinematographer (S. Kumar) and art director (Raja Unnithan). Kathavaseshan which was adjudged the second best feature film claimed top honours for screenplay (T.V. Chandran) and lyricist (Gireesh Puthenchery) also. T.A. Razak got the award for the best scriptwriter for the film Perumazhakalam.

M. Jayachandran was selected as the best music director (song) for the films Perumazhakalam and Kathavaseshan. G. Venugopal was chosen the best male playback singer for the song `Adedi adaadedi aalilakiliye... ' in the film `Ullam' and the award for the best female playback singer went to Manjari for the song `Mukilin makale pozhiyum kanave ... ' in the movie `Makalkku.'

Oridam won the awards for background music direction (Isaac Thomas Kottukapally), processing lab (Chitranjali) and costume (Kumar Edappal). It also got a special jury award for the moving portrayal of a sex worker's life.

Director Liji J. Pullapally (Sancharam) and actors Mamukoya (Perumazhakalam) and Kunchako Boban (Ee Sneha Theerathu) got special mention of the jury.

The award for the best documentary went to `Kovilan Ende Achaachan' directed by M.A. Rahman. Adoor Gopalakrishnan's work titled `Cinemaanubhavam' got the award for the best book on films while the prize for the best report on cinema was bagged by `Mammootty Enna Tharam' authored by C.S. Venkiteswaran.

The other award winners include Antony as the best editor (For the People), N. Harikumar as the best sound recordist (Perumazhakalam), Ranjith Ambady as the best make-up artist (Makalkku) and Meerakrishnan as the best dubbing artiste (Manhupoloru Penkutty).

The Minister said the winners of the 2004 awards would be the first recipients after the cash prize for various categories had been doubled. The best picture gets a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh while the director of the film gets Rs.40,000. The purse for the best director has been increased to Rs.50,000 while that for the best actor and actress has gone up to Rs.30,000. Mr. Sreekumaran Thampy said the jury had received 24 feature films and four documentaries for the awards competition.
