SALEM: Residents of Mallamoopanpatti panchayat took out a rally here on Sunday protesting against Salem Corporation's decision to set up a new dumpyard on 194-acre government land in their panchayat. They said that dumping of waste would spoil the environment and pollute groundwater. They also organised a public meeting to explain the possible consequences of a waste disposal site. Villagers from two nearby panchayats, Ayyamperumalpatti and Manguttai, also participated. The Corporation would use the land as a landfill site like the Erumapalayam dumpyard. Mallamoopanpatti would then face the problems that the residents of Erumapalayam were now confronted with, they said.
`Work of vested interests'
Corporation officials said, "Vested interests are inciting people to protest against us. We will follow safe waste disposal methods at the proposed site." The Corporation is speeding up the process of acquiring the proposed site from the district administration, as the existing yards in Erumapalayam, Veeranam and Sooramangalam have no space to accommodate any more garbage. Waste collection in several parts of the city also remains affected.
