KOCHI: With hardly 300 days left for the United Democratic Front (UDF) Government to complete its term in office, the newly reconstituted Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has given shape to a detailed action plan to activate the organisation and prepare it for the coming Assembly polls. From the setting up of a Congress training institute to organising regional camps for leaders up to block level and conferences of various feeder organisations, the organisation under the stewardship of Ramesh Chennithala is gearing up for the elections. A three-day leadership camp, attended by KPCC members, set the agenda for the election campaign through a resolution. The resolution called for the continuance of the UDF Government in the State to ensure implementation of various development activities. The camp urged political parties to adopt politics of consensus for the development needs of the State. While inaugurating the camp, the former Chief Minister A.K. Antony urged the State Government to refrain from making controversial decisions, including the mineral sand-mining issue, during the next 10 months. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy assured the party functionaries that the sentiments of the activists and the views of the organisation would be taken into account. The new leadership is faced with the task of revamping and motivating the organisation and carrying out damage control measures following the exit of senior leader K. Karunakaran and his supporters. The camp highlighted the need to bring the Congress activists who left the party into its fold. The party plans to republish Veekshanam daily from Kochi by Onam. The KPCC president will be the chairman of the daily and Benny Behannan, KPCC general secretary, its managing director. A.C. Jose will be the chief editor of the newspaper. Mr. Chennithala will take out a Chaitanya Yatra from Manjeswaram to Thiruvananthapuram. Mr. Chandy will flag-off the rally on August 5 in the presence of Karnataka Chief Minster Dharam Singh. The party has constituted a sub-committee for drafting vision 2010, as per a request from Mr. Chandy indicating that the organisation and the Government are to work in tandem in the coming days. Mr. Chennithala nominated new leaders for the Seva Dal, Karshaka Congress and the organisation of coir workers. N. Ramakrishnan will head the Seva Dal, Lal Varghese Kalpakavadi will be the president of the Karshaka Congress and A.K. Rajan that of the coir workers union.
