INSPIRING YOUNG MINDS: N.R. Shetty, Chairman of the south-western region of the All-India Council for Technical Education, addressing students at the graduation day function of G.M. Institute of Technology in Davangere on Sunday.
DAVANGERE: N.R. Shetty, Chairman of the south-western region of the All-India Council for Technical Education, has said that there is an imbalance in the type of engineers in the country. He said that around 75 per cent of the four lakh-odd engineering students who graduated this year had taken up information technology (IT) and IT-related subjects. "This imbalance, if it is not checked, will hinder the development of the country," he said. Participating in the graduation day function of the G.M. Institute of Technology here on Sunday, Mr. Shetty said students should not harp on IT-related subjects alone but take up subjects such as civil, mechanical and automobile engineering as well. He said there is great scope for graduates of these courses even though it is camouflaged under the glitter of IT-related courses. "There is an IT boom in the country now, and most parents assume that there is no other subject that will ensure their children a good future," he said. Mr. Shetty told students that merely acquiring knowledge does not make one a complete engineer. Common sense, good communicative skills, dignity, and loyalty are just as important, he said. He commended the college for its commitment to provide quality education to students. K. Balaveera Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum, told students to be selective about their jobs and stay in a job for a while before seeking better opportunities. G.M. Siddeshwar, MP and Chairman of GMIT, distributed gold medals to students. G.M. Lingaraju, secretary of the college, and B.T. Patil, college principal, spoke on the occasion.
