Garbage piles up at Ber Sarai `dhalao'

Area residents face serious health hazard as MCD turns a Nelson's eye

ALL FILTH: Heap of garbage which is seldom cleared by the MCD at Ber Sarai

NEW DELHI: With garbage piling up at an open dhalao at Ber Sarai in South Delhi, the residents have accused the Municipal Corporation of Delhi of not only a scam in recording garbage truck trips -- when actually none visit -- but also of creating unhygienic conditions which could lead to spread of dreaded disease like malaria or dengue.

Raising the issue, a resident, Suresh Panje, has alleged that while as per records a truck visits the colony every day, in reality garbage has been piling up at an open dhalao (garbage dump) for a long time and very often the MCD truck does not visit the place for weeks on end. And as and when it turns up, it picks carts away no more than a single scoop lifted by the shovel tractor that accompanies it.

With two to three tuck-loads of garbage being left behind each time, the resident charged that by the time the next visit of the truck takes place, the garbage heap rises a great deal. What is worrying the residents is not only the unbearable stench emanating from the dump, or the water which flows out of it making walking difficult on the adjoining roads; they are more concerned about the health hazard that the garbage dump is posing.

Accusing the MCD of not being serious about the issue of checking spread of disease, residents charge that while the inspectors occasionally visit the colony and check out the coolers and water tanks for mosquito breeding -- often handing out challans for perceived violation -- now when the garbage dump is posing a serious health hazard, they are not taking any steps to close, clean or properly construct it.
