BANGALORE: Their smiles said it all. For a day, underprivileged children from various non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the city forgot their sufferings and hardships and enjoyed an exciting day full of activities and contests. The occasion was `Monsoon Miracles,' an inter-NGO talent competition organised by "Dream-A-Dream" foundation, which works with voluntary organisations for disadvantaged children. As their laughter reverberated through Bal Bhavan at Cubbon Park, these underprivileged children danced, sang, and put their imaginations at work to bring out their creative best. The event saw over 150 children from six NGOs in the city vying with each other, trying to put their best foot forward. The event was an enormous success, as it helped instil a sense of pride, worth and inspiration in the children to continue to work hard. They competed in several categories, including painting, collage making, short story writing, written quiz, drama, singing and dancing. The second half of the event was primarily devoted to the performing arts. The competition culminated with the dance category, which proved to be the most exciting and well-received event of the day. The audience cheered and clapped for their favourite items as the performers moved to the beats of various Hindi and Kannada tracks. To encourage the children, trophies were given to those who bagged the first, second, third and fourth places. The winners were also given attractive school bags that were sponsored by SoftJin. "Dream-A-Dream" plans to make Monsoon Miracles an annual event. The "Outstanding Performance Award" for an NGO winning the most awards this year was given to Sukrupa, a community centre for slum children based in R.T. Nagar. They were given a rolling trophy. There are plans to expand Monsoon Miracles next year and enable more children to participate in the programme, said a representative of the "Dream-A-Dream" foundation. The voluntary organisation works with 350 diverse groups of underprivileged children, and their aim is to integrate children from all sections of the society through exposure and empowerment. It is through sustained exposure to activities such as sports, outdoors, creative arts, reading based programmes, computer-based programmes that the organisation aims to empower children.
