Lack of initiative

The city is being neglected by the State Government. While Vizhinjam has been neglected, Vallarpadam, which has only 9 m natural depth, has been given preference for the construction of an international container terminal. Steps are yet to be taken to obtain clearance for the Vizhinjam project or securing aid from the Centre. Container transhipment is not possible at Vallarpadam since at least 15 m natural sea depth is needed for anchoring. Even if dredging is done, the maximum depth that can be obtained at Vallarpadam will only be 11m. Vizhinjam, on the other hand, has a depth of 24 m.

Traffic rules

Of late, overtaking of vehicles through the left side has become a common sight on the roads in the city. This causes problems for elders and women while alighting from buses. Often, they are knocked down by the oncoming vehicles. Authorities concerned should take steps to punish violators of traffic rules.

Open ATM counters

At present, Canara Bank has opened ATM counters in some places in Thiruvananthapuram city. However, customers of the Trivikramamangalam branch of Canara Bank, Thamalam Road, have to walk about 5 km from this branch to reach the nearest ATM counter at Puthenchantha or Spencer Junction. The customers of the area find it difficult to avail themselves of the ATM facility now. Since a large number of State service pensioners draw pension from the Trivikramamangalam branch, it will be of great help to them if an ATM counter is opened at this branch.
