BIDAR: Members of the Arya Samaj took out a rally on Monday protesting against alleged encroachment of land meant for the Shiva Chandra memorial in Humnabad. Members raising slogans walked from the memorial to the tahsildar's office. They later submitted a memorial to the Government. They said that they would not part with an inch of the memorial land. Earlier, they organised a "yaga" to ward off evil spirits at the memorial. The members threatened to intensify the agitation if the City Municipal Council and the district administration did not clear the land of encroachments. They alleged that the CMC members had connived with officials to sell land belonging to the Samaj. Lakshman Rao, Shiva Chandra, Narsing Rao and Ravji Rao were shot dead by the Nizam's forces during the Hyderabad Karnataka liberation movement. Nonagenarian member of the Arya Samaj and former CMC president, Shankarappa Chidri, said the Deputy Commissioner had granted 1.5 acres of land to the Arya Samaj on the direction of the then Chief Minister Devaraj Urs.
