BANGALORE: The Government is prepared to teach English from the first standard in Kannada-medium schools from this year. However, the Cabinet will be shortly taking a decision on whether to teach the language from standard one or standard three, the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, Ramalinga Reddy, told the Legislative Assembly on Monday. Replying to a call attention notice from K. Annadani (Janata Dal-S) and Narendra Babu (Congress), Mr. Ramalinga Reddy said the Primary and Secondary Education Department is ready to introduce the language either from the first or third standard from this year. Those teachers who teach the language for fifth standard students would be asked to teach the subject for students of standard one. There is no shortage of teachers to teach the language, he said. Stating that 39 per cent of students of Kannada-medium schools failed in English in the SSLC examination held in April 2005, the Minister said several members of the Upper House have supported the Government's proposal to introduce the language from the first standard. The Government has written a letter to the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development to issue an order to make the teaching of Kannada compulsory in all English-medium schools. Kannada would continue to be the first subject in Kannada-medium schools, Mr. Ramalinga Reddy said. Dr. Annadani, Mr. Narendra Babu, H. Anajanyea (Janata Dal-U) and Roshan Baig (Congress) spoke urged the Minister to issue an order to introduce the language from class one. S.S. Patil (Congress) said the Government should recruit English teachers and build the required number of classrooms in government primary schools located in remote areas.
