BANGALORE: The Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in association with the Bangalore-based Centre for Symbiosis of Technology, Environment and Management (STEM) has launched a job-oriented postgraduate diploma course in infrastructure management (PGDIM). Said to be the first of its kind in the country, PGDIM will be a one-year full-time course open to graduates in all disciplines of engineering, including agricultural engineering and architecture, and postgraduates in other disciplines. The candidates should have scored a minimum of 50 per cent marks in aggregate in the qualifying examination. While the VTU will award the diploma, the course will be conducted at the School of Management for Infrastructure and Development Strategies India (MINDS), a division of STEM. The classes are scheduled to commence on August 17. The scheme and syllabus of the PGDIM programme and the examination pattern have been prepared by a team of academics.The programme is spread over three trimesters. The first trimester is of 15 weeks' duration, including orientation and field visits. This is followed by the second trimester of 15 weeks and the third of 16 weeks, involving a live project assignment and comprehensive viva-voce examination. Selection of candidates for the 60 PGDIM seats will be based on academic record, group discussion and an interview. A maximum of 250 candidates will be short-listed for group discussion and interview, based on the academic performance in the qualifying examination. The group discussion and interviews are scheduled for August 6 and August 7. Selected candidates will be informed of the results by August 9. Application forms could be obtained from the VTU regional office, 3rd Floor, R.V. Teachers College Building, Jayanagar 2nd Block, Bangalore: 560011, on a payment of Rs. 500 in the form of demand draft favouring "Finance Officer, VTU, Belgaum, on any bank payable at Belgaum. July 31 is the last date to submit the filled forms along with two passport size photographs and copies of educational qualifications from 10th standard onwards. With this course, MINDS aims at training managers to meet the specific demands of the infrastructure sector, broadly covering contract management, infrastructure finance, advanced project management and regulatory issues in infrastructure management, its officials told presspersons here on Monday.
Avionics course
The VTU plans to start a master's degree programme in Avionics in association with the multinational firm, Honeywell. Honeywell will be considered an extension centre for VTU's postgraduate programmes, the Vice-Chancellor, K. Balaveera Reddy, told presspersons. The avionics programme is scheduled to be launched "very shortly," he said. The course will have an intake of 18 or 25 students.
