NALGONDA: In a joint operation, police teams of Cyberabad and Nalgonda killed the CPI (Maoist) district committee member and Rachakonda area secretary, Golanukonda Chandraiah alias Raju (30), and two of his women companions at a hill, near Tumbai thanda in Narayanapur mandal, on Monday. Three naxalites, top brass of the dalam, reportedly fled the scene under the cover of fire. Luckily, none from the police side sustained injuries in the alleged exchange of fire that is said to have lasted for 45 minutes. Armed with specific information on the trio's movements, police teams surrounded Yellaiah gutta, 2 km away from this tiny thanda, according to the Officer on Special Duty (OSD), V.Ravinder. He further said the police parties had to retaliate the indiscriminate fire opened by the naxals in self defence. The police chased Chandraiah and his wife, Valigonda Premalatha (20), after killing an unidentified woman naxal, suspected sentry, on top of the 450-ft hill. Meanwhile, another police party took up position and killed the fleeing duo at the foot of the hill. A bullet pierced through Chandraiah's ear and another one ripped off his ribs. However, bloodstains were not visible on the bodies.
Arms recovered
Braving the rain and inhospitable terrain, the Inspectors-General, Hyderabad range and Gray Hounds respectively Meena and Durgaprasad the DIG, Govind Singh, the Nalgonda SP, M.M. Bhagwat, and the Gray Hounds SP, N.Balasubramanyam, trekked 5 km on the hill to visit the hideout of the naxals. One short weapon, four rifles, two grenades, one claymore mine and two land mines and utensils were recovered at the spot. Hailing from Poddutur in Valigonda mandal, Chandraiah had been a hard nut to crack for the police for the last one decade. The OSD said he was involved in more than 20 crimes, including the killing of three policemen and three local leaders, and torching five RTC buses on the national highway. The bodies were shifted to the district headquarters hospitals in the evening.
