HYDERABAD: The Government has posted G.N. Phani Kumar, who is awaiting posting, as the Additional Chief Electoral Officer, General Administration Department, in place of V. Anil Kumar. Admission under BC-E category

VIJAYAWADA: The NTR University of Health Sciences has invited applications from candidates belonging to BC-E category for admission into BPT/BSc (MLT) and BSc (nursing) courses for 2005-06. The applications will be available for sale for three days from July 26 to 28 at the office of the health university, Vijayawada, only. The filled in applications have to be submitted before 5 p.m., July 28. Candidates who had already applied should send a copy of caste certificate issued by the MRO before July 28. - Staff Reporter

SC/ST hostel flooded

Sangareddy: The SC, BC hostel complex in Ambedkar Colony of Patancheru was partially inundated by rainwater. Water accumulated on the low lying hostel premises as all the drains in the vicinity were choked for the last three days. The students complained of shocks due to faulty electrical wires and moist hostel walls. Even after a day no efforts have been made to shift the boys to a safer place. - Staff Reporter

11 children fall ill

VIZIANAGARAM: Eleven children of the BC Welfare Hostel in Nellimarla were admitted to the district headquarters hospital at 11 p.m. on Sunday for suspected food poisoning. According to hospital sources, the children were admitted with complaints of vomiting and diarrhoea. The children claimed they were served dinner with a lizard in it. All the children were stated to be out of danger. - Correspondent

Two students drowned

Kakinada: Two college students -- Kadiyam Manikhanta (20) and Gummarekula Satish (20) -- were drowned while bathing in the Tossipudi canal near Rayavaram on Sunday. Their bodies were retrieved by divers on Monday.

Bank launches new scheme

ELURU: The Chairman of Indian Overseas Bank, C. Narayana Samy, on Monday launched a new scheme, IOB-Jeevan, intended for provision of insurance cover to the bank clientele. The scheme was launched in collaboration with Life Insurance Corporation of India. With a maximum life cover of Rs. 1 lakh, it will benefit account holders in the 18-55 age group. - Staff Reporter

FAPCCI extends nomination deadline

HYDERABAD: The Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry has extended the last date for receipt of nominations for the FAPCCI Awards-2004-05 till August 1. A press release said a brochure with guidelines, details and questionnaires on awards was available at the federation's office for Rs. 100. Debt drives farmer to suicide

ANANTAPUR: Unable to overcome the debt trap a farmer of Narepalli in Tanakallu mandal, K. Vemanarayana (50), committed suicide on Sunday night by consuming pesticide.

Rain to continue

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Cyclone Warning Centre has forecast rainfall at most places over north coast and many areas over south coastal Andhra during the next 36 hours. A CWC bulletin said the well-marked low-pressure area lay close to the Orissa coast on Monday evening. Strong offshore winds with a speed reaching 45 to 50 kmph are likely along coastal areas during next 24 hours. Rajahmundry experienced highest rainfall of 7 cm during the 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Monday.

Three hurt as fishermen groups clash

Nellore: Three persons were injured in a free-for-all between two groups of fishermen in Toopilipalem of Vakadu mandal late on Sunday night. - Staff Reporter

221 patients screened at eye camp

TIRUPATI: As many as 221 patients were screened and surgeries performed for 36 visually impaired persons at a special eye camp conducted at Papanaidupet near here by Sevashram, a Tirupati-based NGO, in collaboration with Navajeevan Eye Hospital, Tiruchanur.

Sevashram secretary K. Ravikumar said that the hospital provided to the patients intra ocular lens, spectacles and medicines.

MADANAPALLE: The Lions Club elected new office-bearers at Sri Rama Temple kalyana mandapam here on Sunday. B. Bhaskar Naidu was elected president, M. Shankar Narayana, secretary, and T. Siva Kumar, treasurer.

Mareppa, who is Minister in charge for Srikakulam district, are visiting the district on Tuesday. The PCC coordinator for municipal elections, Rayapati Srinivas, and the PCC observer, S. Srikakulam: Vangapandu Appala Swamy, member of Official Language Committee, will visit the district on July 27. He will review implementation of the official language in the Collectorate and other divisional offices in the district the same day. From July 28 to 30, he will tour different parts of the district and review implementation of the official language. - Special Correspondent

Appointed Youth Congress chief

Srikakulam: Mavidi Srikanth has been appointed district unit Youth Congress president. The State Youth Congress president and Guntur-II legislator, T. Venkat Rao, sent a communication to this effect on Monday.

He was the vice-president before being elevated to the post of president. Speaking to newsmen here on Monday, Mr. Srikanth said his main task would be to strengthen the party's youth wing and prepare for the ensuing municipal elections. -

VIZIANAGARAM: Members of the district Dalit Samkshema Sangam Abhivruddi Aikya Vedika on Monday blocked road traffic at the Collectorate seeking action against BCs of Kondagandredu village in Gurla mandal for obstructing Dalits from cultivating lands leased to them. The Vedika district secretary, G. Satyanarayana, urged the Collector to do them justice. - Correspondent

Former DCC

chief cremated

Kakinada: The former District Congress Committee president, Pothula Seetharamaiah (74), who died at NIMS in Hyderabad on Sunday, following a prolonged illness was cremated here on Monday morning. His body was brought from Hyderabad in the early hours. The funeral was attended by the Minister for R&B, Jakkampudi Ramamohana Rao, the DCC president, Thota Narasimham, and others. - Correspondent

Seminar on human rights

ELURU: The Department of Politics (UG&PG), Sir C.R. Reddy College, will host a two-day national seminar on "Human Rights in India-A perspective and challenges'' here on July 27 and 28, according to the college Principal, R. Surya Rao.

The seminar will be inaugurated by the Andhra University Vice-Chancellor, L. Venugopal Reddy.

Experts in the field of human rights and representatives of civil rights groups from different States will present papers on the theme. -- Staff Reporter

Minister to visit tribal villages

VIZIANAGARAM: The Minister for Tribal Welfare, D.S. Redya Naik, will visit tribal villages in Parvathipuram division on July 27 and participate in a review meeting with the ITDA officials in the evening. After a night halt in Vizianagaram and a review meeting with officials on July 28 he will leave for Sitampeta in Srikakulam district, according to an official release. - Correspondent

Former DCC chief cremated

Kakinada: The former District Congress Committee president and former secretary of the Pradesh Congress Committee, Pothula Seetharamaiah (74), who died at NIMS in Hyderabad on Sunday, following a prolonged illness was cremated here on Monday morning. His body was brought from Hyderabad in the early hours and the funeral procession was attended by the Minister for Roads and Buildings, Jakkampudi Ramamohana Rao, the DCC president, Thota Narasimham, the City Congress president, Dwarampudi Chandrasekhara Reddy, party leaders and others from various political parties including the former TDP Minister, Mudragada Padmanabham. - Correspondent
