BANGALORE: Following the leak of the second semester engineering mathematics (MAT21) question paper on Monday, Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has rescheduled the examination to July 31, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. About 40,000 students had to return home without writing the examination at 118 centres across the State. The university had posted a staffer at the Bellary centre to confirm whether reports about the question paper having been leaked were true. "The person compared the leaked questions with the examination papers and they tallied," the VTU Vice-Chancellor, K. Balaveera Reddy, told The Hindu. The VTU has now asked the principals of all affiliated engineering colleges to return to the university the question paper bundles without opening them. The Vice-Chancellor warned that the varsity will initiate strict action against those found responsible for the leak. If the papers had leaked at the college level, the VTU will not hesitate to even disaffiliate the institution, he said. Till a few years ago, college principals had to personally take the question paper bundles from the treasury to the colleges on the examination day. After assuming charge as Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Reddy had changed the system and ensured that the papers were stored in the strongrooms of the colleges. "We had to trust the principals and make them responsible for the safety and security of the papers," Dr. Reddy explained. It was not immediately clear how and from where the question papers leaked. "We will have to inquire into it," he said, adding that the guilty will not go unpunished. The re-examination has been scheduled for July 31 as the centres are busy with the practical examinations on weekdays.
