BELGAUM: Activists of the National Federation of Indian Women staged a dharna in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here on Monday seeking 33 per cent reservation for women in Parliament and State legislatures. The Chairperson of the State unit of the federation, Parimala Vijaykumar, led the activists. Meera Madar, Lata Pawashe, Kala Sateri, Milan Rajput, Uma Mane, Shivleela Hiremath, Shobha Shinde, Gangu Chougule, Nagarva Naik, Gourava Gadivaddar, Rohini, Poornima Pawar and Suvarna Chougale were among those who participated in the dharna.
Memorandum
In a memorandum addressed to the United Progressive Alliance Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi, the federation demanded that the Reservation Bill be passed in the monsoon session without delaying it on the pretext of discussion. The issue has been discussed for more than 14 years, the federation said. Addressing the activists, Ms. Parimala said the 81st Amendment Bill to provide 33 per cent reservation to women was introduced in1996 when the United Front Government was in power. Unfortunately, only the Left parties took a positive view on the Bill while the rest created hurdles in its passage despite the promises in their poll manifestoes, she added.
