ALAPPUZHA: The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) National Council has demanded that the Union Government withdraw the move to introduce the newly prepared consumer price index which is a `fraudulent one.' It has demanded the appointment of a new Consumer Price Index Commission. CITU president M.K. Pandhe and general secretary Chitthabrata Majumdar, briefing the deliberations at the third day of a meeting of the Council here on Monday, told presspersons that the method adopted by the Government for preparing the consumer price index had not been a fair one. Instead of collecting the retail prices of consumer items, the Government relied on wholesale prices for preparing the index. Some of the shops from where the present commission collected the prices were fictitious. Mr. Majumdar noted that Finance Minister P. Chidambaram's stance on the interest rate for Provident Fund deposits did not favour workers. The Minister had not made any provision in the Union Budget to pay 9.5 per cent interest on PF deposits.
