BANGALORE: The Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi, said the involvement of children in raising funds for the blind helps make them more sensitive to the needs of the visually impaired. "From a young age, these children realise that the visually impaired are protected members of society and not a burden," he said at a programme to felicitate institutions and children involved in raising funds for the National Association for the Blind, Karnataka. The NAB-K is a voluntary organisation set up in 1977. It runs training centres for the education, training and placement of blind persons. Over 25 persons were felicitated on Monday. More than two per cent of the population of the country is visually impaired and more opportunities should be given to blind persons, Mr. Chaturvedi said. Joyce Kane, president of the Southern Connecticut Chapter of the U.S. National Federation of the Blind, spoke about her dog, Corey, who has been with her for about six-and-a-half years, by her side in every step. Ms. Kane said dogs such as hers are the best companions for the visually impaired. "The disability is not a major issue, it is only an inconvenience for me," she said.
