MUMBAI: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will commission a Rs. 35 crore upgraded airport terminal for the city on July 28 to cope with the expanding operations of new domestic airlines, according to airport director Sudhir Kumar. At a preview for the press on Tuesday, Mr. Kumar said this was the AAI's attempt to provide world-class infrastructure. The Mumbai airport would set the trend for 30 domestic airports in the country. The new aluminium and glass-fronted terminal will house the operations of all major private domestic carriers and will cater to seven million passengers a year. From July 28, all private airlines such as Jet Airways, Air Sahara, Spice Jet and Air Deccan will move into the upgraded building. The two-phase upgradation of the domestic terminal costs Rs. 83 crores. Construction on the second phase, which is expected to start once this new terminal is in operation, will take four months. The terminal designed by architect Hafeez Contractor and built by Unity Infraprojects limited has for the first time used roofing made from Aluminium alloy that is used in most international airports. The terminal building was energy efficient with a skylight and could function in the day without artificial lighting, said Mr. Kumar.
