Congress has obtained a majority in the 39-member Pondicherry State Representative Assembly by securing 20 seats. The following is the final party position in the new Assembly, the elections for which were held from July 18 to July 23: District Congress 20, People's Front 16 and Independents 3. Mr. Edourd Goubert, former Counsellor of the French India Government, and Mr. R.L. Purushottama Reddiar, former leader of the Pondicherry Congress, were the notable successes among the Congress candidates.
