Steps to preserve Hampi ruins

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: The Minister for Revenue, M.P. Prakash, on Tuesday assured the Assembly that all efforts would be made to conserve the historic Hampi ruins as a world heritage spot and said that officials of the Tourism and Kannada and Culture Departments would be deputed to conduct a survey of the area to check if there are any encroachments.

The Minister was replying to the Leader of the Opposition, B.S. Yediyurappa, who was seeking to move an adjournment motion on the issue. Ruling out setting up of a House Committee to look into the issues raised by Mr. Yediyurappa, the Minister said the Hampi integrated development project is being implemented. Mr. Yediyurappa pointed out that of late the environs of Hampi have come under all kinds of threats, including that of a community conducting Urs. Minister said he would inquire into it and conceded that for some time the Goa-Gokarna-Hampi tourist circuit is known for drug abuse.
