BEIJING: China has called for highlighting the fundamental interests of the people and world peace in the on-going six-party talks in Beijing. "All the parties should keep those firmly in mind," the Chinese delegation spokesman Qin Gang told a news briefing, noting that the international community was closely watching and pinning hopes on the on-going talks. "That is the most favourable condition for pushing the talks to achieve results," he said. He cited the three previous rounds of talks and a series of consensus on issues reached during those talks as an "important basis" for making headway in the current dialogue. "It is in the interests of every party and is conducive to peace and stability in the region and the world at large to achieve a nuclear-weapon-free Korean peninsula," he said. Mr. Qin said resolving the nuclear issue is a complicated process, adding it is hard to predict what results can be achieved. He urged all parties to make unceasing efforts towards achieving the goal. "China hopes all parties can show sincerity and flexibility and a pragmatic spirit to advance the process of the six-party talks". All the delegations participating in the talks have adopted a positive attitude, the spokesman said. China has held consultations with the other five delegations in recent days. "The general impression we have got is that all parties involved are positive, sincere and pragmatic," Mr. Qin said. All the parties are focused on exchanging views in a candid manner, he said.
