3,000 habitations to be covered in the district this year

  • Programme will be taken up on a permanent basis every year
  • 11 lakh saplings to be distributed this year
  • Households will be supplied with tree-bearing and other variety of saplings
  • Velugu project directors to monitor the programme at village level

ANANTAPUR: Zilla Parishad Chairperson G. Thippeswamy has stated that the village which excel in tree plantation drive will be given preference in the implementation of development and welfare schemes. Similarly, schools taking up plantation on a large-scale will also get priority over other schools in getting facilities.

Talking to newspersons after a meeting with the heads of various departments and district Collector Y.V. Anuradha on the Anantha Grameena Vanam programme here on Tuesday, he said that each household would be given two fruit-bearing and three other variety saplings for planting them in front of the houses or in their backyard.

The programme would be taken up on a permanent basis every year to improve greenery in the district. The rate of survival was likely to be higher as tall and healthy saplings would be given under the programme.

All the beneficiaries of housing schemes would also be told to raise at least five plants each. He urged the mahila samakhyas of Indira Kranti Patham to take lead in making the programme a success.

He noted that about 10 lakh saplings would be supplied under the Grameena Vanam scheme and another one lakh under Vidya Vanam scheme.

It had been proposed to cover about 3,000 out of 3,340 habitations in the district this year. While the fruit-bearing plants would be purchased from nurseries outside the district, other saplings were available in the nurseries belonging to the Forest, DWMA and other departments in the district.

Earlier, the Collector formed a committee with the Project Director of DWMA, the Deputy Conservator of Forests and the Chief Executive Officer of ZP, to be headed by the Joint Collector to place orders for supply of fruit-bearing plants.
