Rehabilitation sought for people displaced by irrigation projects

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The Rythu Coolie Sangham (Andhra Pradesh) has demanded that the State Government take immediate steps for rehabilitation of the people displaced by various irrigation projects.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the Rythu Coolie Sangham president, S. Jhansi, and the vice-president, M. Sriramulu, said that the Government should announce rehabilitation package for the victims before beginning the construction of the projects. It should pay Rs. 16,000 per acre to tribal farmers.

The Sangham leaders condemned the police lathicharge on the victims of the Thotapalli project when they organised a protest programme sometime ago.

They discussed various issues at their State executive committee meeting held on July 24 and 25 in the city.

They also demanded that the Government implement the Jayati Ghosh Commission's recommendations with regard to preventing suicide by farmers in the State.
