Two farmers commit suicide

KURNOOL: Two farmers committed suicide in different incidents in Kurnool district on Tuesday. According to reports, B. Pullaiah (22), of Gopavaram in Mahanandi mandal ended his life by hanging himself from the fan. In another incident at Tammadapalli, Sivarami Reddy (26) died after consuming pesticide. - Staff Reporter

Two naxalites surrender

WARANGAL: Two naxalites belonging to CPI (ML) Maoist party surrendered to the police in the presence of the Superintendent of Police, M.S. Ravindra, on Tuesday. According to a police press release, S. Narsimhulu of Nalgonda district and N. Swapna of Medak district gave in before the police. Narsimhulu was the military platoon deputy commander and was involved in seven murders and one blasting of MRO and MDO offices.

Swapna worked as Nalgonda district Platoon B Section commander and was involved in two murders. - Staff Reporter

Man injured in wild boar attack

KURNOOL: A farmer, identified as Narayana, was injured in an attack by a wild boar at Pudur village near here on Tuesday. According to reports, he was working in the field when the boar, which was chased by some persons, pounced on him and gored him in the stomach. He was rushed to the general hospital here. - Staff Reporter

Booklet on farm information released

Hyderabad: The Agriculture Department has brought out a 128-page booklet containing answers by experts to numerous questions posed by farmers from different areas of the State through the toll-free telephone facility of the department (1100). The booklet was released by the Agriculture Minister, N. Raghuveera Reddy, at Secretariat on Tuesday. - Special Correspondent

Move to promote female literacy

ELURU: Godavari Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited, a State-owned company, has decided to institute `Grameena Balikala Pratibha Purskaram' from the current academic year as part of its endeavour to promote female literacy in rural areas, its Area Sales Manager, G.V. Bhaskar Reddy, has said. It was decided to select six districts, including West Godavari, in the State for the awards and 50 schools in each district. The two school toppers in 9th and 10th standard examinations would receive Rs. 3,000 each as part of the award. - Staff Reporter

Naidu postpones Telangana trip

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party president, N. Chandrababu Naidu has postponed his three- day tour of North Telangana districts of Adilabad, Karimnagar and Nizamabad scheduled from July 27, in view of heavy rains in these areas. He will now visit these places from August 2 to 5, according to a press release. - Staff Reporter

SVU plans new M.Tech course

TIRUPATI: Sri Venkateswara University is planning to introduce an M.Tech course in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) in its SVU College of Engineering. At a meeting conducted in the campus on Tuesday, the authorities decided against making it a self-supporting course. The course will have 18 seats, 13 of which are expected to be filled with GATE-qualified candidates and the rest will be made sponsored seats. Staff Reporter

Dogs go hunting in deer park

KHAMMAM: A pack of dogs, which sneaked into the Kinnerasani deer park at Palvancha, killed 11 animals on Tuesday evening. According to reports, the caretakers left the park after feeding the animals around 4 p.m. As soon as they came out, the dogs turned the park into a hunting ground and killed deer after deer. As passers-by informed the forest staff, they went to the rescue of the rest. - Staff Reporter

Officers' association distributes textbooks

BIJAPUR: The State Bank of India Officers' Association on Tuesday distributed textbooks, schoolbags, and furniture in Mahal-Ainapur near here. Inaugurating the function, the vice-president of the association's Bijapur chapter, M.G. Venkatesh, said the association is celebrating its silver jubilee by adopting a school in a village in all districts of the State to help poor students and upgrade infrastructure. — Staff Correspondent

Man killed as roof collapses

Raichur: Siddappa (65) was killed when the roof of the house collapsed on him owing to heavy rain, in Maski on Monday. The Maski Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Boy killed in accident

Raichur: Hanumantha (9), son of Lachamayya, was killed on the spot when a lorry ran over him in Kavital village of Manvi taluk on Monday. The Kavital Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Five injured

Raichur: Five passengers were injured seriously when the tractor in which they were travelling overturned and fell on the roadside on the State Highway 23, near Pothnal on Monday. They have been admitted to the primary health centre in Pothnal village. The Balaganur Police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

National seminar

GULBARGA: The Sharanabasaveshwar College of Science here will be hosting a two-day national seminar on "Foundations and frontiers of differential equations and its applications," sponsored by the University Grants Commission from July 30. The seminar will be inaugurated by senior scientist, INSA, N.M. Bujurke. Subhas Bohoosnurmath of Karnataka University will deliver the keynote address, a release from the principal said. B.S. Kiranagi of University of Mysore will be the chief guest at the valedictory function.

Bidar: Chandrashekar Gada has been appointed as the district secretary of the Vishwa Hindu Parishat. The national vice-president, Sadanand Kakade; national secretary, Baburao Desai; and the South India convenor, Pramod Mutalik, and State unit president, Govind Naregal, were present during the selection, a release from Ishwar Singh Thakur, north Karnataka convenor, said.

Man arrested

BELLARY: C. Thomas (34), resident of Vankai camp near T.B. Dam in Hospet, was arrested under the Goonda Act. The Superintendent of Police, in a press release, said Thomas was facing around 23 criminal charges, including murder and attempt to murder.

Thomas has been sent to Belgaum Central Jail. — Staff Correspondent

House collapses

CHIKMAGALUR: Two women were injured when their house collapsed in Shankarapura extension here on Tuesday as incessant rain continued to lash the district. They have been admitted to the government hospital.

YSR to visit Nellore today

Nellore: All arrangements have been made for Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy's visit to Nellore district on Wednesday. The Chief Minister will lay foundation stone to the proposed city traffic park at Nellore, near Chemudugunta on the outskirts of the town. The Chief Minister's tour to the district has been cancelled twice earlier due to various reasons. - Staff Reporter

SHAR officials seize forest timber

Nellore: Security officials of Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR) seized two country boats for allegedly trying to transport timber from the forest area within the jurisdiction of SHAR. The accused, said to be four, however managed to escape. - Staff Reporter

11 held at Piler, property recovered

CHITTOOR: The Piler police arrested 11 persons for various offences and recovered stolen property worth Rs. 5.44 lakhs from their possession, according to Superintendent of Police V.V. Gopala Krishna. - Correspondent

Farewell to outgoing IG

ONGOLE: Police officers from Guntur, Nellore and Prakasam districts have thanked the Inspector-General of Police, Guntur Range, T. Krishna Raju, for providing good leadership and guidance to them and particularly to those working in naxal-infested areas.

Mr. Krishna Raju, who was transferred, handed over charge to his successor, Rajwant Singh, at Guntur on Monday evening. He was given a touching farewell at a function held here late last night.

The Superintendent of Police, Prakasam district, Mahesh Chandra Laddha, who presided, said that Maoists had killed 14 persons in the district during last year. Mr. Krishna Raju had given his officials and staff a free hand in dealing with naxal violence and desisted from exerting any pressure on them. - Special Correspondent

Additional beds for hospital demanded

Srikakulam: The Advisory Committee meeting of the headquarters hospital held here on Monday urged the Government to sanction 100 additional beds to the hospital. The meeting also decided to shift blood bank unit to the newly constructed building. The District Collector, A. Koteswara Rao, Zilla Parishad chairman, V.Y.Suryanarayana, Superintendent of the hospital, G. Jagannadham, DM&HO, K. Jaganmohan and area hospitals coordinator, B. Sivaprasad were present.

The meeting also decided to take permission from the Commissioner for filling up sanctioned but vacant posts on contract basis.— Special Correspondent

Pensions in grama sabhas

Kakinada: The payment of pensions of all categories, should be done hereafter only at the grama sabhas on fifth of every month, that too in presence of the peoples; representatives and officials. The East Godavari Collector Anil Kumar Singhal has instructed all the sarpanches to convene the gram sabha to disburse pensions to widows, disabled, weavers and senior citizens.

He wanted them to give wide publicity to the holding of such sabhas through village servants much in advance. — Correspondent

Water scheme

Kakinada: A permanent protected water supply scheme for the tsunami-affected Subbampet village students was inaugurated at the village upper primary school premises on Tuesday. The scheme was provided by the Lions Club Kakinada Vision. T.C.Devaki Devi president of the club, who presided, said it was the first permanent project taken up by them during current year. — Correspondent

Rehabilitation mela for naxals held

ADILABAD: A rehabilitation mela for surrendered extremists was held at the Chakrapani memorial hall at the AR headquarters in Adilabad district on Tuesday. The mela was attended by 70 former naxalites including 10 women. District Collector R. Subba Rao said the issue of rehabilitation of surrendered extremists will be taken up as a special case. He said all assistance will be extended to the surrendered naxals.- Staff Reporter

ICRISAT labour accept token system

HYDERABAD: The temporary farm labourers (TFL) at ICRISAT Patancharu campus have agreed to accept the new entry token system, which is linked to biometric access control and will be operational from August 1. According to an ICRISAT press release, the issue was discussed by Sangareddy MLA T. Jayaprakash Reddy, with TFL representatives and resolved.

Gang held, property seized

KARIMNAGAR: A 10-member gang involved in stealing iron equipment from various places in the district, including the new railway line camp, poultry farms, etc. were arrested and stolen property costing Rs. 2.36 lakhs recovered.

The accused were remanded them to judicial custody, according to Karimnagar DSP Y. Sai Narsa Reddy.- Staff Reporter The arrested include L Srinivas, 25, Abdul Rasheed, 25, R. Ravi, 23, G Sanjeev, 20, V. Saraiah,40, M. Satish, 21, Ch. Mallesh,19, E. Kumar, 19, P. Nagesh, 19 and R. Kumar, 21.
