WAY TO AILMENTS!: Drainages left uncovered at Abidnagar in Akkayyapalem in Visakhapatnam. Photo: C.V. Subrahmanyam
VISAKHAPATNAM: A heavy rainfall stayed away from the city. What we got was a nagging drizzle. It did bring some benefits, but it also led to several attendant problems. Roads that are still being laid and at various stages of completion have turned into slushy stretches as witnessed in the Dabagardens area. Equally conspicuous are the drains that are left uncovered. A partially covered drain is an invitation for diseases. With the agency reeling under viral fevers, the thought of contagious diseases is never out of the minds of city-dwellers. The rainy season is the peak time for fevers even in the urban areas.
Garbage pile
The slabs drains are generally removed to clean up the clogged drains. For some reason, garbage is also thrown near it. It takes no time for it to pile up and tumble into the drain. With several ministers and VIPs visiting the city, a lot of efforts are made to keep it spic and span. But no civic body can afford such callousness. There is a lurking danger for those driving two-wheelers. It will benefit the people if the civic authorities see to it that the slabs are put back after the drains are cleaned up. It will further the Municipal Corporation's contribution for prevention of diseases.
