HYDERABAD: An indolent husband, two unemployed and school dropout sons and no means to make the ends meet. Braving these trying circumstances, 42-year-old Ademma of remote Borakuntaraspalli village in Cuddapah district flew to Kuwait five months ago with royal dreams, only they came down crashing.

Having toiled for 18 hours a day as maid, she returned to Hyderabad on Tuesday, exploited, battered and empty-handed. "After extracting work from me for four months, my woman employer beat me up and deported me without paying a single paisa," a crying Ademma told The Hindu on Tuesday.

Even more pitiable is the manner in which the employer allegedly retained whatever little gold the maid had. "She took away my earrings, bangles, anklets and even clothes. I flew to Hyderabad in my night gown," the sobbing woman said.

The woman had gone to the Gulf twice earlier and worked for nearly seven years, saved some money, returned to the village, built a house and was living with three sons and husband. But, her youngest son Narasaraju (8) fell sick and died after a prolonged illness. With all her savings used up for her son's treatment, Ademma decided to go to the Gulf again to rebuild her fortunes. When she landed in Kuwait on February 8, she was hired by Faisal. He paid her a monthly salary equivalent to Rs. 4,000 for two months.

Just when Ademma thought everything was falling in line, Faisal's mother took her to another city. "She used to find fault for everything and beat me up frequently. Once I even attempted to kill myself," a dejected Ademma recalled. Finally, the employer on Monday night handed over her to the police who deported her from Kuwait.
