Average speed is to be increased from 14 kmph to 20 kmph The target is to be achieved by December-end More than 5.51 lakh cases registered in first half of this year Rs. 4.94 crores collected as fine so far
HYDERABAD: The target that the city traffic police have set for themselves may sound easily attainable. But, it certainly is a difficult task. They want to increase the average speed of vehicles by 6 kmph! Considering the present average speed - 14 kmph on busy corridors - and increasing it to 20 kmph involves better traffic flow management at junctions, controlling wayside parking, setting up more traffic signals, improving road conditions and better coordination among traffic managers. More focus on traffic regulation rather than enforcement is equally important. The target is to be achieved by December-end. "Bad condition of road stretches of about 300 km has been found to be slowing down the traffic," said traffic chief A. K. Khan at a press conference. Mr. Khan said that more personnel would be entrusted with the job of regulating traffic rather than imposing penalties on rule violators. Traffic signals would be installed at 50 junctions. Mr. Khan said that traffic police collected Rs. 4.94 crores by registering 5.51 lakh cases during the first half of this year.
