NEW DELHI: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Union Minister Vijay Goel will organise a "Bijli Adalat' on Thursday "to expose the false claims of the Delhi Government and the private power companies on fast-running meters and inflated electricity bills". This public hearing will be held at Town Hall in Chandni Chowk where representatives of the power companies will also be present. Appealing to the people at large and the residents' welfare associations to join this movement, Mr. Goel urged the consumers to come with their old as well as new bills so that the representatives of the power companies could see for themselves the injustice being done to them. The former Union Minister criticised the arbitrary and unjustified increase in electricity charges to the tune of 35 per cent ever since the Delhi Government handed over the distribution of power to private companies three years ago. Lashing out at the Sheila Dikshit Government for having undertaken a 10 per cent increase for domestic consumers and nearly 20 per cent for the farm sector, Mr. Goel said this had financially burdened the common man. The household budget of lakhs of families had been badly affected by this decision of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Delhi Government, said Mr. Goel. "The common man has lost confidence in the present Delhi Government headed by the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, and it was better that she steps down from office due to failure in governance." Mr. Goel said with this very purpose he was undertaking a "padyatra" from August 29 to protest against the deteriorating power and water situation and also arbitrary increase in the price line of essential commodities. He reiterated that the padyatra was part of his endeavour to reach out to the general consumer and directly listen to their problems. The situation regarding water and electricity has become so worrisome that people were ready to come out on the streets against the indifferent attitude of the Delhi Government. The BJP leader said the `padyatra' would provide the necessary platform for a joint movement against the anti-poor and anti-people policies of Congress-led Government.
