CHENNAI: Counselling under the single window system for engineering admissions began at Anna University here on Wednesday for nearly 73,000 seats in 227 government, aided and self-financing colleges throughout the State.

The first to be counselled were around 260 physically handicapped candidates and those from other States who were competing for 1,169 seats. Education Minister C. Ve. Shanmugham, who visited the counselling centre, said nearly 62,000 students had applied for the 38,000 seats in government colleges. IT and Electronics and Communication courses continued to be in demand and not many seats were likely to remain vacant this year. Counselling for affiliated colleges will begin in September. Classes in Anna University colleges will begin on August 18. The Government is studying the legal issues for drafting a new admission policy next year, he added.

Counselling for 1,100 vocational stream candidates who were competing for 700 seats would be held on Thursday. The 61,513 academic stream candidates who had applied for 38,000 seats would be counselled from Saturday onwards, Anna University Vice-Chancellor D. Viswanathan said. Counselling would end on August 27.

This year has seen 11,000 more applications for the academic stream than last year. Till now, 10 self-financing colleges have surrendered around 3,000 management quota seats to the university and many more are expected to follow suit. "As job opportunities in the IT sector have opened up, we expect very few unfilled seats this year. Last year, 17,000 seats remained vacant after the single window admissions which were then filled by the managements themselves,'' said Mr. Vishwanathan. Fifteen banks have come forward to offer educational loans for paying the full tuition fee without any collateral, he further said.

Enhanced connectivity

by BSNL

Software for this year's counselling has been developed using D2K as front end and Oracle 8i as database, and connectivity established between the counselling centres at Coimbatore, Madurai and Tiruchirappalli using different point-to-point links from Chennai which is the master site. Each link is of 64 kbps capacity.

BSNL provided the necessary broadband connectivity for the entire process and adequate back-up support has been provided, a university press release said.
