DU condemns police action

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Condemning the "brutal attack" on Honda employees by the Haryana police on Monday, the Delhi University teachers' and students' community on Wednesday came out in support of the workers and announced a one-day "University bandh" on August 1 to express their solidarity.

While the bandh has been called by the Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) and the Delhi University and College Karamcharis' Union (DUCKU), Wednesday saw the University Community for Workers' Right circulate pamphlets in the campus area and hold corner meetings to condemn the police repression.

In a statement, the Community said a University-wide campaign was being planned to take up the issue and demanded that all the workers who have been retrenched be given their jobs at the factory back and their union be recognised under the Trade Union Act of 1926.
