Now file I-T returns in air-conditioned comfort

Special camp at Pragati Maidan from July 28 to 31; 500 officials would be deployed at 150 counters

NEW DELHI: Though much earlier than last year -- when the last date for filing of Income Tax returns was extended up to October 31 -- salaried employees, pensioners and senior citizens will be able to file their Income Tax returns this year in air-conditioned comfort during the special camp being organised by the Income Tax Department at Pragati Maidan here from July 28 to 31. To facilitate the filing of returns, the Department has also made special arrangements for those not possessing Permanent Account Numbers and would be providing free parking and park and ride service at the venue.

Announcing the arrangements, the Chief Commissioner of Income Tax Delhi XIII, Manju Lakhanpal, said on Wednesday that of the 6.5lakh taxpayers falling in the category of salaried employees, pensioners and senior citizens in Delhi, nearly 1.5lakh had filed their returns by July 25, while around 30,000 filed their returns on Tuesday and Wednesday. The remaining 4lakh-odd assessees are expected to avail of the camp at Hall No. 11 near Gate No. 7.

The Chief Commissioner said a total of 92 officers and 500 officials would be deployed at the 150 counters to be set up at Pragati Maidan. Of these counters, 42 would be exclusively for senior citizens who would be issued spot refunds in case they turn up personally to file their returns. According to Ms. Lakhanpal, there are nearly 30,000 senior citizens who file their returns.

Simultaneously, counters will be set up by the Unit Trust of India and the National Stock Depository Limited at Pragati Maidan where people will be able to apply for their PAN number and on the basis of the receipt issued to them will be able to file their returns.

To facilitate the filing of returns, there will be about 10 counters operating as helpdesks where people will be able to make general or specific enquiries, seek status of their PAN numbers or take guidance in filing the returns on their own. The taxpayers having salary or pension income, Ms Lakhanpal said, will have to file their returns in Form No. 2D, 2E, ITS 3 (Saral, New Saral and Saral ITS 3 Return of Income).

As for the refunds of the previous year, the Chief Commissioner said almost 85 per cent to 87 per cent refunds have already been made and the remaining were mainly stuck on account of problems of filing of wrong PAN by the assesses. Stating that the Income Tax Department was fully computerised, she said in case there was any discrepancy in tallying of data the computers block the generation of refunds.

But this year to expedite the process of refunds, the Chief Commissioner said returns on which refunds are to be issued would be segregated in the beginning and taken up on a priority basis.
