dated July 29, 1955: Brahmaputra in spate

Widespread heavy rain in the sub-Himalayan region has sent up several river systems in spate, fast filling up the cup of misery for thousands of people in India's eastern States of Bihar, Assam and West Bengal. The axis of the monsoon trough continues to lie close to the foot of the Himalayas, forecasting continued heavy rain in these regions, adding up to the rivers' rampage. Hundreds of people have already evacuated to safety zones, leaving their homes and hearths to float in the swollen waters. One of the worst affected areas in the region is the northern part of Assam, where about two million people, clustered on the banks of the Brahmaputra, stand exposed to its whims. With all surface communications cut off, Assam was completely isolated from the rest of the country for two days in succession, except for the wireless and the air link.
