dated July 29, 1955: Austria becomes free

The red and white flags of the Austrian Republic were hoisted over Vienna on July 27 replacing those of the four occupying Powers as Austria became a free country for the first time since German troops moved in in March 1938. A jubilant crowd thronged the square outside the Allied Council building to watch the final act of the Allied occupation. While the four national anthems played, soldiers hauled down the flags of Britain, France, Russia and the United States. Before the last Allied Council meeting began, the first contingents of the new Austrian Army marched into position to surround the Council building.
