Opinion may be divided on the Kerala High Court upholding the judgement of the District and Sessions Court's giving death sentence to five CPI(M) workers in the case relating to the brutal murder of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha leader K.T. Jayakrishnan in front of schoolchildren while he was taking classes. But it will be an eye-opener for the cadres of political parties who get involved in this culture of vicious retaliatory killing spree. The areas in and around Panur were calm when the report of the High Court verdict trickled in. There were neither protest demonstrations by CPI(M) supporters nor displays of jubilation by BJP-RSS activists in the region. The verdict appeared to have sent shock waves that were felt across the fault line defining the old political rivalries in these areas.
