Ordinary Congressmen are baffled by the jumbo committee of the Kozhikode district unit of the party. After a reshuffle, the committee now has 24 members, including a president, four vice-presidents and a number of general secretaries. Earlier, its strength was 18. M. Veerankutty, who retained the post of the District Congress Committee (DCC) chief, sees the increase in strength as a positive development. The party took a stand to accommodate members from all sections of society. "Religion, caste and region were considered. It's a good team with 16 new faces," he says. Insiders in the party say the members were chosen on the basis of their group affiliation. State-level leaders ensured that their supporters were included. At the same time, there were many who were left out. And, there is only one woman in the new committee. Unfazed by the criticisms, Mr. Veerankutty says the district unit is going ahead with novel projects such as the computerisation of the DCC office and engaging a full-time activist to remain in the office round-the-clock to deal with the problems of the public.
