ERODE: There is a sharp decline in Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) in the district, said Collector D. Karthikeyan. At a press conference here on Thursday, he said that a special maternal audit was conducted at the Collectorate every month to discuss details pertaining to number of pregnancies, deliveries, MMR and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR).
Infrastructure provided
District administration, doctors of Primary Health Centres (PHCs) and Village Health Nurses were taking efforts to bring down MMR. MMR in the district was 1.4 for a thousand deliveries, and even those were due to natural causes. IMR was also low in the district. Infrastructure was provided to maternity and children's wards at Government hospitals and PHCs in the district, he said. Buildings for 68 sub centres would be constructed at Rs. 3.47 crores from NABARD, and the works would begin soon. PHCs and sub centres would be constructed at Rs. 50.91 lakhs in Dharapuram health division under Government allocation. As many as 69 doctors were appointed at Government hospitals and PHCs on a contract basis, as per instructions from the Government. They would be made permanent employees once they passed the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission. Nineteen pharmacists were also appointed, he said. Erode Government Headquarters Hospital was given the ISO 9001 certification. A block for women patients would be constructed at Rs. 45 lakhs at the Hospital with contributions from two Rajya Sabha MPs, a few MLAs of the district and small savings incentive funds. The mortuary at the Hospital would be made air-conditioned at Rs. 6 lakhs. Further, at Rs. 1.96 lakhs, 48 intercoms would also be provided.
Outpatient ward
Building for an outpatient ward at Kodumudi Government Hospital would be completed soon at Rs. 45 lakhs. Of this, Rs. 15 lakhs was sanctioned from MLA Constituency Development Fund and the rest from part II scheme.
